The UV Water Systems residential filter system is designed for untreated water such as stored rain, spring, bore and river water. In order to achieve the required water clarity of above 70% UV transmission and also to achieve New Zealand drinking water standards, filters must be used before the UV. In most cases 3 filters should be used on most untreated water before the water flows into the UV chamber. This filters the water to a high degree and removes floating matter that may effect the water turbitity. The most common prefiltration include the following 3 filters:
The UV will optimally work provided that the calculation relating to the UV chamber length, width and water flow rate have been calculated correctly. In addition to this the lamp wattage and water clarity or turbitity also need to be calculated in.
A question often asked is how long the filters will last between changes. This depends on the quality of the water that enters the system. For example if your gutters are clean you have no over hanging trees, keep your water tank clean etc then the filter elements will last much longer.
In most cases the average life is 6-9 months however if your house is newer then you could get 12 months between changes. It is best not to leave it longer than this.
The filters are designed to remove and store contaminants from the water, therefore, it should be noted that these cannot just be rinsed out, they do require replacing. The 3 filters must be replaced and changed together. You should not mix a dirty filter with a clean filter. One exception is that the pleated paper can be rinsed out with a hose once or twice before it needs to be replaced.
We recommend that if your water is hard to invest in a salt brine softener.
